The course will cover the theory behind traditional charcoal making. It will then explain the advances in design using retort systems. The making of biochar will be explained and its credibility as an tool for environmental management analysed.

Topics will include charcoal making both traditionally and in a retort system, alternative charcoal making systems to the anilla stove, biochar, the making of biochar and its application in the UK.
