Course summary

When you’re out walking in winter, have you ever asked, “what tree is that?”
Once all the leaves have fallen from the trees, many people can be stumped to correctly identify what they are seeing in the woods and hedgerows.

This Winter Tree Identification workshop will enable participants to identify winter twigs (from deciduous trees) using a ‘key’. We will start with a brief indoor session about twig terminology before heading outside. Trees and shrubs growing at Denmark farm will be tackled in addition to many other specimens. If the weather is poor a range of material can be collected to ID inside and the tutor will bring lots of additional samples.

Copies of ‘A guide to the identification of deciduous broad leaved trees and shrubs in winter’ FSC by Andrew May and Johnathan Panter AIDGAP will be available to use during the course. This is a useful key and not very expensive if you would like to buy it for yourself. A hand lens and a small notebook would be useful.

Please bring warm and waterproof clothing, boots and a packed lunch. Hot drinks will be provided.
