A permaculture site with agroforestry, orchard, no-dig, treescape design and a campsite
We are a five acre permaculture-designed smallholding where we aim to live in a low impact way, creating a richly diverse and productive space, whilst championing what we call ecological localisation. The site is young (in 2022) and growing month-by-month. In includes
- a no-dig vegetable growing area
- an apple orchard
- carefully designed shelterbelts, windbreaks and hedging
- a forest garden
- a willow coppice area
- a camping and glamping site
- sheep, ducks and chickens used in specific ways for land management

Patch of the Planet is a project, learning hub and family smallholding. We aim to develop, experiment, learn from and teach ways to live more in harmony with the natural world.

We are particularly focused on investigating ways to provide as much as possible for peoples’ needs from a local patch of land and to be able to do so in very low impact ways. We try to be guided by the principle that we are animals living within our local landscape, not somehow separate to it.

This vision feeds our desire to grow our own food and live closely with our land. But it’s also behind the enterprises that we run here, including a tree nursery and natural arts enterprises.
- The tree nursery, “Trees for Resilience”, is a young enterprise, propagating and selling trees that are focused on building resilience into productive land systems. These are trees that can take the challenging weather patterns that we’ll see in the coming decades and trees that support systems by building or feeding soil.
- The natural arts enterprises – "Wyld Arts" – investigates how art and creativity can be expressed by using and making materials from our natural, local landscape.

We are a learning hub too and run workshops and courses, including Permaculture Design Courses (PDCs), details on all of which are on our web site.  We also run a small campsite and a bed and breakfast, which again operate in small and simple ways.

The site was designed using permaculture principles and contains several young but developing features of interest, including an orchard, a forest garden, windbreak and hedge designs, a willow coppice, a “zone 5” wild area, vegetable growing areas and a “polycrub.” As of 2022 the site is young and developing but is a fantastic opportunity to see a young design in implementation stage.
