This design was my attempt to build an understanding of the permaculture principles, by assessing a few well-known presentations of the principles and pulling together a new set that worked for me.

Whilst the permaculture principles pulled together by David Holmgren are the most widely used in permaculture, they are by no means the only way the patterns of nature have been expressed. There are countless versions of permaculture principles out there and some can speak to any one of us more strongly or more clearly than others. For me, during my diploma, I felt a calling to Patrick Whitefield's work, and some of the phrases and statements of Bill Mollison. But the more I looked, the more principles I found.

I felt I needed to get to grips with what a set that I could understand and that meant something to me, so I analysed a few sets of principles, found where they crossed over with each other and pulled together a set that I could work with. I used these throughout my diploma in almost every other design, and I revised and adapted it as I went. The set at the end of this design is what I often still refer to. That said, sometimes there's a phrase that just puts it perfectly. Who can beat "The problem is the Solution" after all?
