Whitby permaculture

We are not far from Whitby in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Our four acre site is a wildlife haven and we have worked with the natural environment to create a sustainable initiative that is both attractive and educational. Several log cabins nestle amongst the ancient woodland, surrounded by wildlife log and brush piles, approached by woodmulch paths. Our stunning vegetable and flower garden sits at the top of the site, along with our menagerie of rescue animals who provide valuable fertiliser. We have a space where we can spend time with visitors who want to share experiences or  learn more about how to live in tune with nature for total wellness.

Our organic potager style vegetable and flower garden, features a range of colours and textures within a semi formal design. It is pleasing to the eye and easy to access whilst productive all year round. Our small menagerie help us to to be practically self-sufficient and cater for guests at our wellness retreats.

We make compost from vegetable waste and manure from our rescue ponies and chickens as fertiliser. Woodchip/mulch both from our woodland and from a local tree surgeon is used as a weed suppressant and also to make paths through the woodland.

We rotate crops and grow insect and bee friendly flowers alongside the vegetables. Our bird population is burgeoning as a result of the habitat we have created in the woods, and nesting boxes around the site, and our feathered friends provide first class insect control.

The ancient woodland is home to a variety of wildlife including owls and bats, who also do valuable work to keep the circle of life in balance.

Our latest venture is an eco-reservoir for all our water requirements. A natural plant based filtration system will also keep the water clean for guests interested in cold water therapy.

Guests staying in cabins can wander the site or request tours of the vegetable garden, nutrition information or and mindful night walks.

A small number of students work with us at the week-ends helping on the site and with animal care and cooking.
